Many people react with amusement when they see the Prepper14 Magnator for the first time. Lines like “Are you planning to drive 400 km/h?” or “You could lift your car with that thing” are just two examples. Sounds funny — but technically it is complete nonsense.

The advantage of the Prepper14 Magnator is simple: you get very, very close to a fixed installation.

The large stainless-steel plate and its six strong neodymium magnets are galvanically bonded. This combination — paired with the large 2 mm plate surface and six strong magnets sitting as close as possible above the car roof — creates a very high capacitive coupling to the vehicle in RF terms.

That is why the Prepper14 Magnator is not only extremely well suited to large antennas such as the Kick-Ass Predator or other antennas that prefer a large ground plane — it is also interesting for the amateur radio world: it enables strong RF coupling that even allows operation with suitable antennas on the long-wave shortwave bands such as 80 metres. That is exactly where ordinary small or even triple magnetic mounts run into insurmountable problems.

The Prepper14 Magnator is built by hand. Its size does come with one caveat: the roof surface should be as flat as possible — curved car roofs cause problems for the magnets' seating. On a VW bus, an SUV or an estate car there are usually no problems at all.

The time has come: the Prepper14 Mini-Magnator, a quadruple magnetic mount, has seen the light of the radio world. After a few setbacks, the smallest possible quadruple magnetic mount has been created — one that still holds a major advantage over ordinary and triple magnetic mounts.

Thanks to the 2 mm stainless-steel plate and its four neodymium magnets — galvanically bonded and sitting as close as possible above the car's sheet-metal roof — a large capacitive coupling with the vehicle is achieved. This coupling makes it possible to run large antennas on CB that need a lot of ground plane: a Kick-Ass Predator, Lemm Vortex PL and the like are no problem and deliver an excellent SWR.

The Mini-Magnator is designed to be not much bigger than a triple magnetic mount while achieving a higher capacitive coupling with the vehicle. And it, too, is hand-built in Germany!

I drive a VW Caddy — a roof with recesses, so not good conditions for a magnetic mount. Uwe (Prepper14) pointed me to the Mini-Magnator. And what can I say? I was instantly thrilled: it fitted right into the middle of my roof, and the feel and workmanship are really excellent.

What I really like is that you can attach your own PL cable instead of being limited to the usual 4–5 m. I have managed to tune antennas that gave me real trouble on other mounts — among them a Moonraker Ampro 80 for the 80-metre band. Even so, I was able to bring it down to an SWR below 1:1.5. A very good result!

For hilltop operation I like to use our Citroën Jumper. Its roof is very uneven, so I needed something suitable — a fixed installation is not an option for me. The Mini-Magnator fits perfectly onto the area intended for a roof hatch and leaves enough clearance so the roof does not get damaged.

Being able to use my own PL cable had me sold straight away — I like running H-155. On the hill I mostly use the Sirio Performer 5000, almost 2 m tall: at speeds of 150 km/h the Mini-Magnator remained completely unimpressed. Both of my antennas tuned to a good SWR without any problems.

I had already optimised my home-made 3-point magnetic mount with a larger stainless-steel plate — but I wanted more. With the Mini-Magnator I immediately noticed a better SWR reading, and the usable bandwidth of my Sirio 5000 Performer increased significantly.

Update: I achieved an SWR of 1:1.6 and below between 26 and 28 MHz. This mount suddenly turned my Sirio 5000 Performer into what the manufacturer had specified — without drilling a hole in my roof. The antenna is now usable across more than 2 MHz. This mount is a game changer; I can only recommend trying it.
